The Average of Five

It started on MySpace with your Top 8, and has now made it’s way to Apple’s iOS8 update.

But even before Apple’s first iPhone and MySpace’s launch there was a man named Jim Rohn who declared…

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

I feel almost certain that, at the very least, you pick up habits, tendencies, emotions and information from the five people you spend the most time with. In time, you become your best friends. There are even suggestions that in the right scenario, your heart can sync with a loved ones. There’s also the concept that people will take on characteristics of their pets after a long period of time. So how does this related to you? What types of positive and negative implications are coming through each of your 5 closest friends? Food for thought, indeed. A little more on Mr. Rohn. Jim was an American entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker who passed away in 2009. Rohn’s book, The Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, further describes Jim’s five components of success.

1. Philosophy – how you think
2. Attitude – how you feel
3. Action – what you do
4. Results – measure often to see if you are making progress
5. Lifestyle – the kind of life you can make for yourself out of the first four pieces

Here’s another powerful Rohn quote from the book: “It seems that every life form on this planet strives toward its maximum potential…except human beings. A tree does not grow to half its potential size and then say, ‘l guess that will do.’ A tree will drive its roots as deep as possible. It will soak up as much nourishment as it can, stretch as high and as wide as nature will allow, and then look down as if to remind us of how much each of us could become if we would only do all that we can.” A profound thinker to say the least.
